It started with two singers and a lot of music.
Johnston Music began in 2013, when Nathan and Michaela started arranging and recording learning tracks for choruses and quartets around the St. Louis area.
What began as a small project grew through years of singing, arranging, teaching, performing, and working with vocal ensembles.
Today, Johnston Music creates learning tracks for singers and ensembles who want more than just the notes. We want the music to feel natural, musical, and useful from the moment you start learning.
Michaela Slamka-Johnston
Michaela is a fourth-generation barbershopper, following in the footsteps of her dad, Mike Slamka, and grandfather, Jack Slamka, as a gold medalist.
She won as a tenor with ClassRing, earning a Rising Star championship in 2014 and an SAI International Quartet Championship in 2019.
Michaela also sings tenor with her husband, Nathan, in Double Date, which won the BinG! World Mixed Quartet Championship in 2014 and 2016.
She taught music for five years and now focuses on raising their two children while creating learning tracks for quartets and choruses.
Nathan Johnston
Nathan has been a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society since 2011. He began singing barbershop with the Ambassadors of Harmony while attending the University of Missouri St. Louis.
He earned a gold medal with the Ambassadors in 2012 and two bronze medals in collegiate quartet competition.
Nathan holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and a Certification in Audio Engineering.
He currently sings baritone with Michaela and their friends in Double Date, which won two BinG! World Mixed Championships in 2014 and 2016. Nathan also sings with Quorum, the 2023 BHS International Quartet Champions.

Our combined experience spans barbershop, choral music, arranging, performance, teaching, and audio production. We have spent years on both sides of the music, as singers learning a part, performers interpreting an arrangement, and musicians creating the tracks that help other singers do the same.
We care about interpretation. We care about phrasing. We care about the little things that make a part feel musical instead of mechanical.
Because when you're learning a song, you shouldn't just be learning what to sing. You should be learning how it feels to sing it.
